From internet trailblazer to data center pioneer
A pioneer pushes the boundaries of the imaginable. In 1988, few could imagine the internet. We were prepared for this adventure and connected Salzburg to the rest of the world.
So much has happened since then: The former Tech-Consult is, today, conova communications GmbH. We were pioneers with the Internet and today we lead the way in data center technology.
2024
Climate protection is very important to us and we have been the first data center in Austria to be CO₂ neutral since 2015. We are constantly taking various measures to reduce our CO₂ emissions as much as possible. At the beginning of 2024 we were certified again and are making an additional contribution by purchasing climate protection certificates. We chose the photovoltaic project in India with a “Gold Standard” and validation by TÜV Süd.
2023
In September 2023 our conova data centers 4 & 5 in Salzburg-Maxglan received the EN 50600 certification too. From now on all conova data centers fulfill the European standard for new constructions and the operation of data centers.
conova has received the Cyber Trust Austria Label. By achieving the Cyber Trust Austria Label in silver, we meet all cyber security requirements based on the Cyber Risk Rating Scheme, which was developed by the Kompetenzzentrum Sicheres Österreich in cooperation with the KSV1870.
2022
Our company with the data centers on the Salzburg-Maxglan and Hallein sites have been sucessfully ISO 27001 recertified and also the processes behind have been proved by the TÜV.
2021
Our conova TopCloud was awarded the Ö-Cloud seal of approval as part of the Ö-Cloud initiative of the BMDW.
2020
Our two new conova data centers 6 & 7 received the EN 50600 certification and thereby comply with the European standard for new constructions and the operation of data centers.
2019
On 25th September, the new conova data centers 6 & 7 in Hallein were officially opened after a construction period of only 11 months.
conova passed the ISO 27001 re-certification again.
2018
conova’s success story continues: We are proud to have exceeded the € 10 million revenue threshold with our now more than 70 employees.
2017
conova continues to grow and serves more than 1,500 customers for the first time in its history with over 65 employees.
2016
conova passed the ISO 27001 re-certification. In 2013, conova was given this certification of quality for the first time. It is the leading international standard for information security management systems.

2013
For the first time, conova communications GmbH is awarded the ISO 27001 certification by TÜV Rheinland – the international quality certificate for information security.
2012
On September 1, 2012, the new branch in Vienna/Schwechat, Wiener Strasse 30/02 opens.
2010
After a record-breaking construction time of only nine months, the conova data center in Salzburg-Maxglan opens its doors.
2009
Breaking ground: The construction of the new conova data center begins in autumn 2009. The Salzburg district of Maxglan is home to the ‘Green Cube’ – one of Europe’s most modern data centers.
2008
The new branch office in the Viennese Mooslackengasse 17 opens on April 1, 2008.
2001
2001 is a busy year: To begin, ‘salzburg-online’ merged with ‘salzburg.at’, a subsidiary of the former Salzburg Stadtwerke. In November, ‘salzburg-online’ and Tech-Consult merge – conova communications GmbH is born: conova moves to the Alois-Schmiedbauer-Strasse 2 in Salzburg.
‘Salzburg-online’ remains an internet provider and a brand of Salzburg AG. This offers the people of Salzburg particularly attractive internet access, especially via the television cable.
conova now provides many important background services such as e-mail and domain registration for Salzburg-online.

1996
The internet provider ‘salzburg-online’ is founded. It is a subsidiary of the then SAFE.
‘Salzburg-online’ operates the Salzburger Bildungsnetz on behalf of Salzburg since 1997.
1995
Internet for everyone: For the first time, the people of Salzburg surf on the commercial internet. Tech-consult works hand in hand with the well-known Eunet GmbH. The Salzburg data highway enables internet at local rates – for nearly all users in the province of Salzburg. Security is a top priority right from the start: Tech-consult builds the first firewalls.
1988
Tech-Consult GesmbH is founded. At the time it was called the Salzburger Hochgeschwindigkeitsrechner GesmbH and is a subsidiary of the Salzburg Technology Center. The name says it all: The primary objective of Tech-Consult is the procurement and operation of the Salzburg supercomputer.
